Southend United Community Foundation is proud to celebrate the 80th birthday of one of the club’s most cherished figures, Frank Banks, whose lifelong service to Southend United and the wider community has left an indelible mark on generations of supporters, players, and residents.
Frank’s journey with the club began in 1958 when, as a teenager, he was spotted playing in a local park near Roots Hall. He went on to sign his first professional contract in 1962 and made over 100 appearances for the first team before moving to Hull City in 1966, where he played more than 300 games and was later voted the greatest right back in the club’s history.
In 1976, Frank returned home to Southend United, bringing his playing career full circle. Upon retiring from playing in 1979, he seamlessly transitioned into coaching and went on to serve the club in multiple roles, including Youth Team Coach, First Team Coach, Assistant Manager, and interim First Team Manager.
In 1991, Frank became Southend United’s first Football in the Community Officer, laying the foundations for what is now the Southend United Community Foundation (SUCF). After officially retiring in 2007, Frank has continued to serve the Foundation with extraordinary dedication and heart.
Today, Frank remains a familiar and much-loved face across all Foundation programmes, from mentoring young coaches and supporting schools’ PE lessons, to tutoring FA Level 1 coaching courses for local young people and NEETs. His leadership of the Senior Shrimpers programme, including hosting the annual Christmas Party at Roots Hall and leading 12 day trips each year, has brought joy to over 100 members aged 60–92.
Over a decade ago, Frank was appointed the club’s PFA Union Learning Representative, further cementing his commitment to supporting both current players and scholars in their personal development and post-football careers.
“Frank is the heartbeat of this club and our Foundation,” said Dale Spiby, Chief Executive of Southend United Community Foundation. “His passion, humility, and service over the past six decades have inspired everyone he’s come into contact with, I consider him a dear friend. Celebrating his 80th birthday is not only a milestone in years but a celebration of a legacy that continues to grow every day.”
Frank also continues to coach multiple teams, including our ever growing Walking Football team, regularly volunteers at after-school clubs and soccer schools, and makes time each week to visit staff and friends at Roots Hall Stadium.
As we celebrate this milestone, the entire Southend United family sends its warmest wishes and heartfelt thanks to Frank Banks, a true legend, role model, and servant of the game
Happy 80th Birthday, Frank, and thank you for everything.
